Acoustic solutions for LEED-certified buildings

How Troldtekt contributes to a LEED certification

Troldtekt meets high standards for documentation of building materials, which enhances a LEED certification.

Troldtekt can enhance 15% of the criteria in LEED

Troldtekt contributes positively to the LEED-certification of buildings and, together with Ramboll Group, has made ready-to-use “pdf-packages” with thorough documentation for LEED-assessors for the relevant LEED-criteria.

Please note: Troldtekt’s documentation for the criteria listed below contains confidential information and will therefore only be given to assessors.

The tables below show the specific criteria which Troldtekt can enhance for LEED certification.

A sustainable material has many aspects
Troldtekt enhances several criteria in the ‘Materials and Resources’ category. This is partly because the acoustic panels are made of 100% natural materials: wood and cement.

The fact that Troldtekt is Cradle-to-Cradle certified at silver level is also a positive contribution. In LEED 2009 New Construction, buildings with Cradle-to-Cradle certified building materials earn more points. Specifically, Troldtekt earns more points for ‘Material Ingredient Disclosure’ and ‘Material Ingredient Optimization’.

In addition, weighting is also given to Troldtekt panels for the recyclability of production waste and residual pieces at construction sites without causing problems in the biological cycle and to the fact that Troldtekt is indoor-climate labelled in the best categories.

Below are some of the most important factors enhanced by Troldtekt in a LEED certification:

Established in 1998, LEED is the American sustainability certification scheme for buildings. LEED stands for:

Leadership in
Energy and
Environmental
Design

LEED is administered by the U.S. Green Building Council and there are LEED-certified buildings in more than 135 countries. You can find more info about LEED at http://www.usgbc.org/leed.

A breakdown of the five areas of focus in the overall assessment:

  • Sustainable sites 26%
  • Water efficiency 10%
  • Energy and atmosphere 35%
  • Materials and resources 14%
  • Indoor environmental quality 15%

"For LEED, material requirements have become increasingly rigorous over the years, which makes it difficult to find products that meet all the requirements. This is why it is crucial for material manufacturers to make sure they document that their products meet all the requirements.

For example, Troldtekt meets LEED’s VOC emission requirements, Troldtekt has an environmental product declaration (EPD) and Troldtekt has certification to document that the wood it uses comes from sustainable forestry. This makes it possible to earn points in several of the material categories by using Troldtekt."

R&D center with a green agenda

The Vestas Technology R&D Center in western Jutland (Denmark) has sprung from the ground as an architectural symbol of the company’s long-standing green agenda.

Here, engineers and energy experts develop the wind power of the future in bright premises, where the ceilings are clad with Troldtekt acoustic panels.

The building is LEED-certified in the highest level platinum category.
