The new landmark for Ringebu village

Ringebu is a Norwegian village located between Oslo and Trondheim. A major new project has been the restoration and renovation of the old bank building which has been changed into a public library, cultural hub and innovation centre. RAM architects were responsible for both the overall design and interior.

It was soon realised by the architects that a project like this should evolve and adapt to changing needs. This is why great emphasis has been given to flexibility and was the basis of all decisions, realising a variety of formal and informal spaces for working, learning and socialising.

In addition to conventional library features, the new ground floor library has areas for cultural events, public information and meetings and is fully equipped to service children, youth and adults. For example, the old bank vault has been retained and become an important youth department. Inside, darker colours are used to create a slightly different atmosphere with spaces designed for homework, reading or leisure time with friends.

The Innovation Centre on the first floor is linked to the entrance and library by a dramatic wooden staircase. Here the facilities include a coffee bar, 8m long dining table in pine and space to hold events and other activities. This cosy place has purposefully been designed in deep saturated colours, as well as touches of natural materials including wood, stone and leather.

Embracing all rooms throughout the building are high performance acoustic ceilings designed to provide the very best sound-proofing and appearance. These are constructed with Troldtekt wood wool panels in various surface textures.

Close collaboration with designers Krible design has also resulted in detailed graphic elements throughout, expressed in signage, symbolism and decorative wall elements.

The overall result is that this multi-purpose building has become a major cultural and social centre for the village.

Anne Dahlen at RAM arkitektur comments ‘We are pleased that the renovation of this former bank is very popular with the village, and its neighbours. The visitors and the people working here welcome the wide variety of facilities and much appreciate its welcoming, warm and acoustically quiet atmosphere.”
