Sustainability award for DGNB platinum-certified office building

25.11.2019

The new Alnatura Arbeitswelt office building in Darmstadt has won the German Sustainability Award 2020 for architecture. Troldtekt acoustic ceilings are one of the natural building materials which were chosen for the project, which is DGNB platinum-certified.

On Friday, 1,200 guests attended the awards ceremony for the German Sustainability Award 2020, which was being presented for the twelfth time at a gala event in Düsseldorf. In cooperation with the German government, outstanding sustainability projects by businesses, local authorities and researchers all won awards. Alnatura Arbeitswelt, a new office building featuring Troldtekt acoustic ceilings, received the award within the architecture category.

The German Sustainability Award 2020 for architecture – with architecture being one of eight categories – was presented for the seventh time by the German Sustainability Award and the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).

The jury highlighted the following about Alnatura Arbeitswelt: “The building impresses with its inherent holistic qualities. It is built for the future, while exploring the potential for building sustainably.”

The 13,500-square-metre building is the head office of Alnatura, which sells organic food products. The building was designed by haas cook zemmrich STUDIO2050 in Stuttgart, and was awarded the highest DGNB certification – platinum – in spring 2019.

Built from natural materials

Alnatura Arbeitswelt is unique in that it is a wood structure and that its facades have been built using rammed earth. Both wood and rammed earth are natural raw materials which, from a life-cycle perspective, are among the most sustainable building materials.

Wood also plays a key role in the interior design – among other things through the choice of grey Troldtekt acoustic ceilings for the office building’s restaurant, which specialises in serving organic vegetarian dishes.

Troldtekt is manufactured from the all-natural materials wood and cement – and is Cradle to Cradle silver-certified. The Troldtekt ceilings ensure good acoustics, a healthy indoor climate, effective fire protection – and contribute points to DGNB certification.

“For us, it’s a real honour that our acoustic solutions were chosen for such a visionary project. Alnatura Arbeitswelt deserves praise for its role as a pioneer within sustainable building. Many congratulations to everyone involved on winning the German Sustainability Award,” says Peer Leth, CEO of Troldtekt.
