Tove Ditlevsens Vej apartments

Two 100m long apartment blocks, built in 1974 at Tove Ditlevsens Vej in Aalborg, have been renovated. Not only do they have a new facade to protect from the west wind but access has been dramatically improved and the quality of the apartments greatly enhanced.

Originally, the otherwise very solid blocks had major problems with cold bridges and drafts in the two storey apartments. The solution involved simultaneously improving the appearance of the front facade and constructing an enclosed access walkway from which residents can enjoy views of the landscape.
Architects Kærsgaard & Andersen A/S, who have extensive experience in renovating apartment blocks, were appointed consultant for the project.

The entire block has been given a new facade to replace the existing one. This has dramatically improved its external appearance by using a combination of attractive materials and large glass sections which provide a pleasant openness, both inside and out. In addition, two elevators and stairwells have been added at the front and, like the existing ones, have been clad in dark brick. Aesthetically, these nicely balance the long facade while the white window frames add vitality and variation.

Access has been improved inside by creating a wider passageway, which also meets the fire rescue space requirements. The large glass sections provide abundant light and residents can now spend time in front of the apartments enjoying the view. In addition, white painted Troldtekt ceilings have dramatically raised the quality of this 'outdoor space' by improving the acoustics and stimulating better social relationships in the block.
