Building of the Year Award 2021: Three projects featuring Troldtekt honoured

14:e dec. 2021

Aarhus School of Architecture’s new building NEW AARCH and the community centre Pakhuset Braunstein at the Port of Køge are among the four winners of the Building of the Year Award 2021 in Denmark. In addition, the primary school Erlev Skole in Haderslev in southern Jutland received an honourable mention. Each of the three projects has used different Troldtekt acoustic solutions in their design.

On Monday 13 December, the winners of the Building of the Year Award 2021 (Årets Byggeri 2021) in Denmark were unveiled. Among the four winners were two projects featuring Troldtekt.

Denmark’s first newly built school of architecture, NEW AARCH in Aarhus, wins the open category, while the simple and sustainable community centre Pakhuset Braunstein in Køge on Zealand won the commercial category. The honourable mentions in the open category also included another project featuring Troldtekt: the primary school Erlev Skole, one of the largest Danish wooden structures to be built in recent times.

Every December, the Building of the Year Award celebrates the best and most important buildings of the year based on their social and architectural importance. The building construction magazine Byggeri is behind the award, while a jury of top managers from the main organisations in the construction industry chooses the winners.

Raw, circular and healthy design

The three honoured projects featuring Troldtekt have different architectural characteristics:

NEW AARCH: ADEPT was the main consultant for the Aarhus School of Architecture’s new building, which is located in the redeveloped Godsbanen district in central Aarhus, the site of the former railway yard. Concrete, glass, wood and steel are recurring materials in the raw architecture, which is designed as a large workshop for exploration and knowledge sharing. The open rooms and the drawing studios feature Troldtekt acoustic panels in natural grey, while the more closed rooms – or ‘toolboxes’ – in the concrete cores have black-painted Troldtekt ceilings.

Pakhuset Braunstein: ADEPT also designed Pakhuset Braunstein with its distinctive roof, which sits like a beautiful sculpture at the Port of Køge on Zealand. The extension to the Bryghuset Braunstein brewery has been conceived as a modern community centre. The building is designed according to circular principles, so that it can be dismantled again if it needs to be moved to a new location or if the materials need recycling. Both the ceilings and walls are clad with Troldtekt acoustic panels in natural wood.

Erlev Skole: The newly built primary school in Haderslev in southern Jutland is mainly built of wood, making it one of Denmark’s largest wooden structures in recent times. At the school, white-painted Troldtekt acoustic panels with concealed ventilation have been installed, ensuring a healthy indoor climate which is free from draughts or noise. Arkitema has – in close cooperation with the engineering company SlothMøller and other consultants – designed the school, which has been named School Building of the Year 2021.
