The Silence of Sport

This gymnastics and multi-purpose hall in Runavik in the Faroe Islands has been designed by BBP Arkitekter A/S as an extension of the existing handball hall.

It was the winning project in an invited competition organised by the Municipality of Runavik, Danish Foundation for Culture and Sports Facilities.

The dramatic roof was conceived as a continuation of the existing hall, mirroring its angled design and terminating with a low overhang at the football pitch end.  This has created a dramatic spatial interconnection between the interior and the outdoors and between the two halls.

The interior comprises a large, open space where the functions are organised around flexible stepped spectator seating along one side. In contrast to the black and glass exterior, it is light with warm shades of yellow and horizontal wood strips. Making the most of the height of the hall, the first floor above the changing facilities incorporates a closed dance hall, commanding views of both the gymnastics and outdoor areas. The balcony has been designed for fitness training, meetings and relaxation.

Troldtekt ceiling panels have been installed throughout, with their yellow custom colour complementing the hall’s warm colour scale and ensuring good acoustics by reducing the noise of sport players, spectators and visitors.
