Troldtekt® acoustic panels based on the cement type FUTURECEM™ are winning a Green Product Award 2022, an international prize that pays tribute to innovative and sustainable design solutions. The new acoustic panels have a negative carbon footprint during the production phases.
At an awards ceremony on 18 May in Munich, the winners of the Green Product Award 2022 will be officially honoured. It is already clear that Troldtekt acoustic panels based on the patented cement type FUTURECEM are among the winners. A total of 100 products were nominated across 12 categories, and the Troldtekt acoustic panels have won the Building components category.
The new acoustic panels are special because they are made using FUTURECEM cement, which helps to significantly reduce the panels’ carbon footprint. The new cement type exploits the synergies between calcined clay and lime filler, and emits approx. 30 per cent less CO2 during its production than traditional cement.
When measuring the phases raw material supply, raw material transport and manufacturing in the life cycle of the acoustic panels, the footprint of Troldtekt acoustic panels based on FUTURECEM is negative. The wood, which is the other raw material in Troldtekt cement-bonded wood wool, absorbs more CO2 as the trees are growing than is emitted during the production of FUTURECEM at Aalborg Portland, the cement manufacturer. And at Troldtekt’s own factory, 97.8 per cent of the energy used is from renewable energy sources.
A pat on the back from the market
An international jury of experts within areas such as architecture, design and the circular economy selected the winners of this year’s Green Product Award.
“It is a big pat on the back for us from the market that our new acoustic panels are – so soon after their launch – winning an international award for combining innovation, sustainability and design,” says Tina Snedker Kristensen, Head of Sustainability and Communications at Troldtekt A/S.
“Almost the entire carbon footprint of an acoustic panel comes from the cement. By replacing traditional cement with FUTURECEM, we have taken a big step in the right direction without altering the strength, useful life and acoustic properties of our acoustic panels,” she adds.
Cradle to Cradle-certified at Gold level
The new acoustic panels based on FUTURECEM are – like Troldtekt’s other cement-bonded wood wool products – certified according to the sustainable design concept Cradle to Cradle at Gold level. The certification covers the acoustic panels in both natural wood and painted in the standard colours white, black and grey.
Troldtekt has been Cradle to Cradle-certified for more than a decade, and bases its business strategy on the principles behind the certification. This means, among other things, that Troldtekt works with recycling in both the biological and technical cycles.
New EPDs for four variants
Consultants and developers can download environmental product declarations (EPDs) for four variants of Troldtekt acoustic panels based on FUTURECEM, including both painted and unpainted panels as well as the award-winning series of Troldtekt design solutions.
The life-cycle analyses that form the basis of the EPDs document that the panels have a negative carbon footprint right up until they are disposed of or recycled.
