Contemporary farmhouse idyll with good acoustics
Ida Lundsteen (@indtaenk) and her family have bought and renovated a multi-winged farmhouse together with a couple of friends. The family has transformed a former stable into a modern family home with a large living room. To give the room a stylish edge, the couple chose Troldtekt acoustic panels.
In 2024, Ida Lundsteen and her family bought a multi-winged farmhouse with a thatched roof on Tuse Næs, near Holbæk, together with a couple who are friends of theirs. Each family has their own wing, which they have renovated separately. Ida Lundsteen's Instagram profile @indtaenk allows you to follow the renovation and interior design process.
In addition to the residential wings, the 550-square-metre farm offers a workshop, a guesthouse and a shed. The property is located in scenic surroundings with views of Holbæk Fjord on one side and its own lake on the other, and where both chickens and horses roam freely.
The farm's history offers more than just farming and rustic charm, even though it was originally a stable and still has stable windows. Before the couple took it over, it was used by children in respite care. It was also used as a former banquet hall for a Danish consul in Ghana, who resided at the address.
One large family room
Ida Lundsteen and her family’s home is 170 square metres, and she describes their style as modern. For the same reason, they wanted a large living room with air and space so the family could be together regardless of activity.
"We wanted to create height in a home with low ceilings. We didn't want it to feel cramped, as we wanted to create space and have a single room where we could be together most of the time – even while someone is watching television, cooking, or the children are playing. You could say that we chose an alternative layout," says Ida Lundsteen, who also works as an independent interior designer and drew up the home's new floor plan herself.
This also means that most of the rooms in the middle section - both on the lower and upper floors - have been combined into an approximately 19-metre-long room with a vaulted ceiling. A couple of rooms have been preserved as a children’s room and a bedroom.
Wood and reuse in interior design
The interior design of the home is Nordic-inspired, and a large amount of wood has been used throughout, including Troldtekt acoustic panels, which contribute to the good acoustics in the high-ceilinged room. The interior is complemented by many plants.
"We wanted to use wood extensively, but to avoid a boring design, we've also installed tiles that reflect light and create a cosy atmosphere around the kitchen and fireplace. It's little details like these that we love," explains Ida Lundsteen.
In the centre of the living room stands an African statue, which the Danish consul in Ghana had placed there in his time and which was not easy to move. The colour scheme of the home generally consists of warm shades of brown and beige. When it comes to interior design, the couple has focused on reuse – but in the right measure:
"We have quite a few reused items, as it doesn't feel right to have only new things in an old home, but it shouldn't be only old things either, because then it becomes heavy. We combine old and new classic design furniture, and with so much wood we use steel to create a contrast."
Troldtekt as a design factor
The couple chose to install Troldtekt acoustic ceilings in the family's large living room. However, that decision was not immediately apparent, even though their carpenter had suggested the possibility.
"When we discovered that our plasterboard ceiling was sagging and needed to be torn down, we suddenly had free reign. Coincidentally, that same week I was in an activity centre in Lejre where everything was built with a focus on sustainability and which had Troldtekt ceilings. It was great experiencing such pleasant acoustics. And it was actually the Troldtekt design that I fell for," says Ida Lundsteen.
The couple subsequently visited Troldtekt's showroom in Copenhagen to view the different variants and textures – and came close to choosing the Troldtekt v-line design solution. However, as their room has many collar beams, they felt that this would create too many lines in the space. That is why classic Troldtekt acoustic panels in white were ultimately chosen.
"Since then, I have confirmed that choosing Troldtekt was absolutely the right decision, also design-wise. Troldtekt creates cohesion and provides a simple look that works well with the 20 beams we have."
The acoustic benefits are also audible, according to Ida Lundsteen:
"We notice a big difference in the acoustics now. We have two rooms without Troldtekt, and you can clearly hear the echo there. When we have visitors, they also tell us how nice it is. We think so, too – we've really achieved a pleasant indoor climate and sound level, even though the room is large with high ceilings."
