90 years of Troldtekt

Troldtekt was founded in Denmark in 1935 and has since evolved from a local supplier in the Danish construction industry to an internationally recognised acoustic brand. Along the way, we have successfully combined function and aesthetics while adapting to the times—technologically, environmentally, and geographically.

Our story spans nine decades of acoustics, architecture and strong values. Below you can dive into some of the highlights from our 90-year journey.

1935

Troldtekt is born: A bright idea in a time of crisis

The construction crisis sweeps through Denmark in the early 1930s. There is a need to build with robust materials at a low price. Troldtekt is born when the 80-year-old trading company A/S L. Hammerich & Co. discovers a factory in Troldhede.

With Danish timber on its doorstep and Portland cement within reach, production of cement-bonded wood wool panels begins.

1940—1945

The war strikes: Need for creative manoeuvres

Europe is at war. A lack of supplies and transport problems force A/S L. Hammerich & Co. to think creatively. Transport by horse-drawn cart to the nearest railway station is one of the means that must be used.

Other creative manoeuvres are used against the occupying forces. The management of A/S L. Hammerich & Co. turns a blind eye when one of the company’s vehicles is “stolen” for one of the resistance movement’s night-time missions.

1956—1969

From wall to ceiling: Appearance now plays a role

The factory in Troldhede will have Denmark’s first fully-automated plant for the production of cement-bonded wood wool panels.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Troldtekt makes its way into sports halls and leisure centres, among other venues. Previously hidden as insulation inside the wall, the panels now play a greater role in both function and appearance.

1978—1986

An extra boost to sales: Healthier ceilings in high demand

Troldtekt is expanding and has started producing panels with white cement as an alternative to the grey variant. This paves the way for Troldtekt in natural wood, which will become one of the company’s best-selling panels.

Sales of cement-bonded wood wool panels get an extra boost as the asbestos crisis hits the construction industry. A Danish local newspaper writes about how cement-bonded wood wool improves the indoor climate and alleviates discomfort.

1995—1999

Suitable for living rooms: Proof of a healthy indoor climate

Troldtekt has had its big breakthrough, and in 1998, customers are given paperwork on one of the important product benefits: Troldtekt receives the Danish Indoor Climate Label as proof of low degassing and low particle emissions.

In production, 80—100 people in two shifts have become 50 people in four shifts. Automation and new machines require fewer hands. The wheels are really turning!

2000—2009

The panels undergo refinement: Smart solutions for more customers

Ventilation via the acoustic ceiling. Built-in sound and light. New colours and textures. Throughout the 2000s, L. Hammerich A/S refines the range of Troldtekt solutions.

This appeals to both architects and homeowners, and Troldtekts' new, modern solutions are increasingly showcased in showrooms and at leading exhibitions.

2010—2013

All in on a new focus: A circular pioneer

In 2010, Troldtekt cement-bonded wood wool celebrates its 75th anniversary as one of the best-known brands in the Danish construction industry. L. Hammerich A/S changes its name and from now on, the company is called Troldtekt A/S.

The wood in the panels comes from certified forests, and at the factory, carbon-neutral fuel is one of the energy sources. On this basis, Troldtekt A/S receives the Danish Building Industry Environment Award, which is presented by HRH Crown Prince Frederik.

Over the next couple of years, Troldtekt goes all in and bases its strategy on the circular design concept Cradle to Cradle. Troldtekt is also one of the small and medium-sized companies that is an early adopter of EPDs (environmental product declarations) with independently verified data on the environmental footprint of its products.

2015—2016

International outlook: Troldtekt across borders

Danish architecture is held in high esteem among our neighbours to the south. This is why Troldtekt founds its first subsidiary outside Denmark in 2015. Experienced German sales consultants start up Troldtekt GmbH with a new office in Hamburg. The following year, Troldtekt AB also opens in Malmö, Sweden.

To meet the growing demand, the factory doubles its production capacity.

2016—2020

New design: Innovation flourishes

Troldtekt has now started experimenting with special designs — for example, the wave-shaped acoustic panel Troldtekt® wave, which wins a 2016 German Design Award.

The big breakthrough comes in 2019 with the launch of an industrially produced design series. The construction industry is embracing the new potential of combining excellent acoustics with distinctive design.

2021—2022

Troldtekt comes under Irish ownership: A shared vision

The global Kingspan Group, based in Ireland, shares Troldtekt’s vision of reducing the construction industry’s carbon footprint. An obvious match is made and Kingspan takes over ownership.

The year brings prestigious awards for Troldtekt: The German Architect’s Darling and German Sustainability Awards as well as the Danish HRH Crown Prince Frederik International Business Award. A focus on sustainability initiatives plays a major role in all three.

One of the new initiatives is Troldtekt acoustic panels based on the carbon-reduced cement type FUTURECEM™ from Aalborg Portland. It’s a popular choice in an industry with an increasing focus on its carbon footprint.

2025

Anniversary year: 90 years - and still going strong

In 2025, Troldtekt celebrates its 90th anniversary as a manufacturer of acoustic solutions in cement-bonded wood wool. This milestone isn’t just about looking back—it’s very much about the future. Rooted in our Danish heritage, we continue to strengthen our position in international markets.

Troldtekt now has dedicated sales offices in Germany, Sweden, the UK & Ireland, Norway, and the Benelux region. In collaboration with Kingspan Group, we are continuously opening new doors across Europe and the rest of the world. Our mission remains the same: to bring acoustic comfort and a healthy indoor climate to modern architecture.
