A new binder developed for Troldtekt

Troldtekt has been manufacturing acoustic panels from wood and cement since 1935. With the Troldtekt LEC binder, we are taking a new step in our efforts to reduce the lifecycle embodied carbon of our products. As part of Kingspan, we have gained greater capacity for innovation in recent years. Troldtekt LEC has been developed specifically for Troldtekt cement-bonded wood wool panels through an innovation partnership with Kingspan Group’s global innovation centre, IKON. It consists of well-tested mineral raw materials and secondary material from other production processes.

"We are ambitious on behalf of people, the planet and our own business. That’s why we continue to reduce the CO₂e footprint of our products. Troldtekt LEC is the most significant example of this development to date."

Michael Heeager Nystrup, CEO, Troldtekt A/S

Troldtekt acoustic panels with LEC have been developed for projects where the choice of materials must contribute to a lower overall CO₂e impact. In addition, the finished acoustic panels contain 25 per cent secondary material.

What does the CO₂e figure show?

The CO₂e figure shows the environmental impact – Global Warming Potential – of the finished panel within the life-cycle phases included in the calculation (A1-C4).

In a direct comparison, the finished Troldtekt acoustic panel with LEC has a 46 per cent lower GWP (kg CO2 e/m2) than Troldtekt based on white cement and a 15 per cent lower GWP than Troldtekt based on FUTURECEM.

The third-party verified data can be found in the EPD, prepared in accordance with EN15804+A2. Among other things, the data can be used in LCA calculations, tenders and building certifications.

Peace-of-mind in both sound and appearance

Troldtekt acoustic with LEC is available in a light and stylish unpainted greige colour. This creates a subdued and cohesive look, allowing the acoustic surface to blend in naturally with the architecture.

You can also choose panels painted in Troldtekt’s standard colours – from light and neutral shades to darker expressions.

Questions about Troldtekt® LEC?

What is Troldtekt® LEC binder and what is new about it?

Troldtekt® LEC (Lower Embodied Carbon) is a new binder with a significantly lower CO₂e impact than our other binders (white Portland cement and FUTURECEM™).

You get the familiar Troldtekt experience – acoustic comfort, a robust and durable acoustic panel and readily accessible documentation – now with a binder that has a significantly lower embodied carbon than white Portland cement and FUTURECEM. The binder is used in Troldtekt® acoustic LEC panels.

LEC is Kingspan’s designation for products with a documented lower lifecycle embodied carbon than the standard products. LEC is part of Kingspan’s Planet Passionate sustainability programme, where an important ambition is to develop building materials with a lower embodied carbon throughout the entire life cycle. We support this ambition with the Troldtekt LEC binder.

How much lower is the CO₂e impact?

We compare finished panels directly across binders, i.e. the same panel type, thickness and declared unit. In a direct comparison, the finished acoustic panel, Troldtekt acoustic with LEC has a 46 per cent lower GWP (kg CO₂e/m2) than Troldtekt acoustic based on white cement and a 15 per cent lower GWP than Troldtekt acoustic based on FUTURECEM.

In short: Lower GWP (kg CO₂e) = lower embodied carbon of the product.

Is the CO₂e reduction documented in the EPD data?

Yes. You can find the third-party verified data in our Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), which has been prepared in accordance with the EN15804+A2 standard. You can use the documentation for your LCA calculations, tenders and building certifications.

You can easily download the relevant documents from our Download Centre.

What does GWP mean in plain language?

GWP is a product’s climate impact expressed as total greenhouse gas emissions converted to CO₂ equivalents (CO2 e). For a Troldtekt acoustic panel, this is stated as kg CO₂e/m² over a service life of 50 years.

GWP shows how much the product contributes to global warming, converted into CO₂ equivalents, so that all greenhouse gases can be compared on the same basis.

In practice: Lower GWP (net) = lower embodied carbon.

What does Troldtekt LEC binder consist of?

The binder is made from well-tested mineral raw materials combined with a by-product from another industry. The Troldtekt LEC binder is patent pending.

What is the proportion of secondary material in the finished panel – and why is it important?

Troldtekt LEC binder significantly increases the proportion of secondary material in the finished panel: The proportion in the finished panel is 25 per cent compared with 1.5 per cent for panels with white cement and 6.7 per cent for panels with FUTURECEM.

This supports projects aiming for a higher proportion of secondary material while reducing dependence on virgin raw materials.

Is Troldtekt acoustic with LEC in the same absorption class as Troldtekt acoustic based on white cement and FUTURECEM?

Yes. Troldtekt acoustic with LEC is in the same sound class as Troldtekt acoustic panels with white cement or FUTURECEM via direct installation or as suspended ceilings. You can therefore create the same tranquillity in your spaces as with Troldtekt based on the other binders. If your project requires specific acoustic values for documentation, we can provide the relevant data and test references.

What is the fire classification of Troldtekt acoustic with LEC, and what does it mean?

Troldtekt acoustic with LEC is available at launch with a fire classification of B-s1,d0. This makes the solution suitable for most types of project buildings.

The panel is fire tested in accordance with EN 13501-1:2018.

B-s1,d0 means in practice:

> Very limited contribution to fire (B)

> Little/no smoke production (s1)

> No flaming droplets (d0)

Which variants of Troldtekt acoustic with LEC are available at launch?

Troldtekt acoustic with LEC is available in the following variants:

Structure: ultrafine

Dimensions: 1200×600 and 600×600 mm

Thickness: 25 mm

Edges: K0, K0-S and K5

Colour: unpainted + standard colours

For now, Troldtekt acoustic with LEC is only available in Germany and Denmark.

What does the colour of the unpainted Troldtekt acoustic panel with LEC look like? How can it be described?

Unpainted Troldtekt acoustic with LEC has a characteristic natural tone, often described as cool beige or 'greige' – a calm, modern colour between warm sand and soft grey.

It works particularly well in interiors where a subdued, architectural expression is desired. If the colour is critical to the project, we recommend viewing a physical sample.

The light measurement for unpainted Troldtekt acoustic with LEC was carried out by an external laboratory and shows a light reflectance value (LRV) of 37.8 per cent. For Troldtekt acoustic in natural wood (white cement), the LRV is 52.5 per cent, while for natural grey (FUTURECEM), the LRV is 19.87 per cent.

Does Troldtekt acoustic with LEC cost more than other variants of Troldtekt acoustic?
