Troldtekt acoustic panels based on FUTURECEM in the running for German Innovation Award

Troldtekt® acoustic panels based on the cement type FUTURECEMTM have been nominated for the prestigious German Innovation Award, which honours outstanding innovation. The new acoustic panels have a significantly lower carbon footprint than Troldtekt based on traditional cement.

“Awards that make innovation visible.” This is how the German Design Council describes the German Innovation Award, which honours innovations that, among other things, take sustainability as well as energy and resource consumption into account. The new Troldtekt acoustic panels based on FUTURECEM are in the running for an award in the ‘Excellence in Business to Business’ category.

The German Innovation Awards is presented by the German Design Council, which is also behind awards such as the German Design Award and the ICONIC Awards. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Berlin in May.

It is on account of Troldtekt’s highly innovative work with documented sustainability that the well-known acoustic panels can in future be based on FUTURECEM instead of traditional cement.

New acoustic panels a breakthrough
FUTURECEM is a type of cement that exploits the synergies between calcined clay and limestone filler. In this way, much of the fired clinker in Aalborg Portland’s cement production can be replaced, and the result is cement with a 30 per cent lower carbon footprint.

Carbon footprint throughout the entire life cycle has been documented in new EPDs:

  • 26 per cent lower than Troldtekt based on grey cement

  • 38 per cent lower than Troldtekt based on white cement

  • Same acoustic properties, natural strength and fire safety properties as Troldtekt based on traditional cement.

“It marks something of a breakthrough that we can replace traditional cement with FUTURECEM without impairing the properties of the panels. We now have a cement-based product which has a reduced carbon footprint compared to our panels based on traditional cement,” says Vibeke Pedersen, Head of Engineering Department at Troldtekt A/S.

“At the same time, we’re working on different methods for recycling in both the biological and the technical cycles, so that as little of the embedded CO2 as possible is released during combustion when the acoustic panels have reached the end of their useful lives after 50-70 years,” she continues.

Troldtekt with FUTURECEM will be launched in March 2022. The new acoustic panels have been ranked by the Cradle to Cradle design concept at Gold level, and are expected to be certified by 1 March 2022.

Troldtekt based on FUTURECEM is also in the running for a Green Product Award 2022.
