CSR report 2022

Cradle to Cradle gold and the muscle to achieve new milestones

Troldtekt has now published its CSR report with initiatives and data from 2022, when the company became part of the Kingspan Group. The year included Cradle to Cradle Gold certification, the launch of carbon-reduced acoustic panels and a promising project involving heat recovery during production.

In 2022, Troldtekt's positive developments in its approach to CSR continued. After a decade of using the Cradle to Cradle design concept as a strategic framework, Troldtekt acoustic solutions advanced to Cradle to Cradle Gold level. In spring 2022, Troldtekt launched acoustic panels based on the reduced-carbon cement type FUTURECEM™. At the same time, we continued to ensure that almost all the energy for our production comes from renewable sources (97.7 per cent).

However, the biggest milestone of the year was the acquisition of Troldtekt by the global construction company Kingspan Group. With the new ownership comes access to resources, skills and systems that provide muscle to accelerate CSR work in the coming years. Michael Heeager Nystrup, CEO of Troldtekt A/S, explains:

"Kingspan is developing building materials for future generations and this fits Troldtekt perfectly. We bring along a wood and cement-based product that improves the indoor climate and is free from harmful chemicals so it can be part of a circular economy. With Kingspan behind us, we now want to expand our products to new markets. This also means that we will be launching a number of development initiatives based on Cradle to Cradle principles and, not least, Kingspan’s sustainability programme, Planet Passionate, which you can read more about in this report.

New EU standards as a framework

At Troldtekt, we have chosen to put together our CSR report for 2022 with new EU standards as a framework. In the summer of 2023, the European Commission published the 12 standards that companies must follow in future when reporting on their efforts in the areas of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG).

"There are still a few years before it becomes mandatory for a company of our size to follow the new standards. But we have already chosen to gain preliminary experience in compiling the report according to the new standards, but without following all the data points that will be included in EU legislation," says Tina Snedker Kristensen, Head of Sustainability and Communications at Troldtekt.

Below you can see highlights from Troldtekt’s CSR report for 2022, which has now been published. For the 13th consecutive year, we are uploading the report to the UN as part of Troldtekt’s commitment to the UN Global Compact initiative.

Highlights from the CSR report

Environmental: 97.7% renewable energy

In 2022, the share of carbon-neutral energy consumed in our production was 97.7 per cent. The figure covers scope 1 and 2 emissions. The electricity comes from wind power (purchased via certificate), while the heat energy comes from our own biomass boiler.

Environmental: Carbon-reduced acoustic panels

In 2022, we launched acoustic panels based on the cement type FUTURECEM™. Measured over the entire lifecycle of the product, the acoustic panels have a carbon footprint that is 26 per cent lower than Troldtekt based on grey cement and 38 per cent lower than Troldtekt based on white cement.

Environmental: From cement to geopolymers?

Troldtekt is part of the ReSource project, which aims to uncover the potential of so-called geopolymers as a possible alternative to cement. In 2022, the project was included in Realdania’s 'Homebuilding from 4 to 1 Planet' initiative.

Environmental: We recover heat

In a new pilot project supported by the Danish Energy Agency, Troldtekt is testing the potential of recovering waste heat from our drying ovens. Initial results indicate a significant reduction in heat consumption.

Social: 50 colleagues on a training course

In 2022, around 50 hourly paid employees from Troldtekt’s production participated in an upskilling course, so they are now able to handle smaller electrical tasks.

General/governance: Cradle to Cradle Gold

In spring 2022, Troldtekt’s first Cradle to Cradle gold certification came into force. The advancement from silver to gold was primarily the result of implementing new paint recipes in production, following lengthy discussions and close cooperation with our paint supplier.
