A systematic approach to reduction

We use renewable energy and new types of binders to reduce the CO2e impact of Troldtekt acoustic panels.

At Troldtekt, we work to reduce the lifecycle embodied carbon of our acoustic panels, all the way from raw materials and production to transport, use and recycling.

Our largest CO2e impact does not come from the production at our factory in Troldhede, but from the raw materials we purchase for use in Troldtekt acoustic panels. Hence our focus on innovation aimed at reducing the footprint, particularly from the binder in the panels .

In brief

CO2e accounting: Overview of scope 1, 2 and 3

Troldtekt’s total CO2e emissions are indicated in our carbon accounting system, which follow the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. In our accounts, we sort the emissions into Scopes 1, 2 and 3.

Scope 1: Direct emissions from our own sources

At Troldtekt, the Scope 1 impact is low because 98.8 per cent of the energy used for production comes from renewable energy sources. Our own biomass boiler supplies heat for processes and buildings by burning wood chips. Some of the chips are residual wood from our own production, which is crushed and recovered in the boiler.

We have also systematically replaced our gas and diesel-powered forklifts with electric ones, while continuously replacing our vehicle fleet with electric vehicles.

Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased energy

We cover the vast majority of the electricity we use with certificates from offshore wind turbines operated by Ørsted. The remainder comes from the solar PV system installed on the roof of our logistics facility in Troldhede. The system has an expected annual output of around 230,000 kWh, most of which is used directly in our own operations.

The low Scope 2 emissions come primarily from district heating consumption at our various office locations.

Scope 3: Emissions in the value chain outside our own premises

Scope 3 includes harvesting and transport of wood, production and transport of binders, external production of accessories, business travel and our office operations in Denmark and internationally.

By far the biggest impact comes from the cement we purchase for our acoustic panels. That’s why our work on binders is crucial to reducing Troldtekt’s total lifecycle embodied carbon.

Energy optimisation in production

For a number of years, we have been working systematically to increase the proportion of renewable energy in production, while also reducing energy consumption per square metre of cement-bonded wood wool produced. We are currently working towards achieving ISO 50001:2018 certification for energy management.

In 2025, 98.8 per cent of the energy used in production came from renewable energy sources:

  • heat from our own biomass boiler, using wood chips and recovered residual wood from production
  • electricity covered by certificates from offshore wind turbines
  • our own electricity generation from solar PV

At the same time, we use an Energy Management System that provides a more detailed overview of energy consumption right down to the production line level. This makes it easier to detect deviations, prioritise initiatives and optimise where the greatest potential lies.

One example is heat recovery in the drying process. Here, heat exchangers recover heat from the humid air that was previously discharged from the drying halls. We reuse the heat for drying the acoustic panels, thereby reducing the need for fuel.

Transport: Focus on short distances and a lower impact

Transport accounts for a smaller part of Troldtekt’s overall environmental impact, but is still an important area of focus.

The wood in the acoustic panels comes primarily from Danish forests, where the short transport distance from forest to production helps to limit the CO2e impact of logistics. During periods when there is insufficient Danish wood available, we can supplement it with certified spruce from other Northern European countries .

Transport is also relevant to the impact of the finished acoustic panels. That’s why we have optimised our distribution to customers through a broad network of timber merchants or distributors in the largest markets.

Transport data are included in the documentation of the environmental impact of Troldtekt acoustic panels in our EPDs.
