Sønderborg Seniorbofællesskab is an exceptionally successful senior co-housing project. The waterfront location near Sønderborg is sublime, with breathtaking views of Alssund, and only a matter of metres from the water’s edge, where you can launch a kayak or simply enjoy the sunshine on the wooden jetty.
Sønderborg Seniorbofællesskab consists of rental housing that caters to seniors 50+ wishing to downsize and who seek a simpler life in close proximity to neighbours. Community is very much in focus, but respect for privacy is of course paramount.
The architecture is of the highest quality and by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter. The Norwegian design studio first shot to fame in Denmark in 2021 with “Kornets Hus” in North Jutland and has now established an office in Aarhus. It is headed by experienced architectural duo Per Fischer and Thomas Carstens.
Part of Frank Gehry’s Masterplan
The three cubic buildings fit seamlessly into Frank Gehry’s Masterplan for Sønderborg’s waterfront. The masterplan dictates that buildings must be staggered, resulting in more sculptural architecture and interesting outdoor spaces. The cubes are beautifully proportioned, and the masonry is generously rendered for a rustic look – not unlike a loaf of artisan bread straight from the oven!
The apartments have panoramic windows and southwest-facing balconies, and on the top floors are outdoor communal areas with rooftop lounges. The ground floor has workshops and a shared kitchen with a dining hall, a communal activity room and a library.
The communal living spaces feature Troldtekt line ventilation, with the black, grooved surfaces forming an elegant backdrop to the tasteful furnishings. Even with a room full of people, the air is pleasantly fresh and the acoustics are fully under control. Troldtekt line has also been installed on the walls of the dining hall, creating a close visual association with the design concept rooted in Nordic simplicity.
The furnishing in the workshop is simpler, but here too Troldtekt line ultrafine is part of the styling and an absolute necessity to keep the reverberation time and the noise of the machines at a reasonable level. This is a place where creativity can enhance the sense of community for new friendships to flourish.
